Melanie Inglessis Tells Us All About Gwen Stefani's Makeup for 'Marie Claire'

We're huge Gwen Stefani fans. From her enduring prowess as the frontwoman for Cali band No Doubt to her L.A.M.B. clothing line and pride in being a working mother, we always look forward to what she's going to do next. Riding the wave of a new album, she graces the cover of Marie Claire's October issue looking as stylish and toned as ever. Makeup artist Melanie Inglessis gave us the inside scoop on what went into the look...

"The creative direction was to play with Gwen's make up," she says. "We talked about bronzing, smoky eyes and a pale lip." The shoot took place in the desert and Stefani was meant to look part of the scenery. The inspiration was "a little Mad Max, a little pin-up mixed with Gwen's effortless and impecable beauty and style."

So, how did Inglessis get the look?

FACE: "I warmed up Gwen's [complexion] using a foundation three shades darker than her natural skin and made sure it was blended throughout any parts of her body showing. Then I used a bronzer and sun-kissed her skin where the sun would naturally hit it to give the impression that she stayed in the hot desert for days."

EYES: "Using a kohl pencil, I rimmed her eyes both on top and bottom. Then I smudged the line using a brown cream shadow. To finish the look, I used two coats of mascara."

LIPS: "A matte nude lip."

Simple. Beautiful. Totally Gwen.
